Personal Midwifery Care in the UK
If you've started researching your maternity options, you may have come across the term "personal midwifery care" and wondered exactly what it means, and where to find it. Unlike NHS care, where you're often seen by a rotating team of midwives, personal midwifery care means having one dedicated, NMC-registered midwife supporting you from your first appointment through to your postnatal visits.
Where can I get personal midwifery care in the UK?
Personal midwifery care is available through independent, NMC-registered midwives working privately across the UK. I'm based in Waltham Abbey, Essex, and provide this care personally across Essex, London, and Hertfordshire, with all appointments carried out in your own home at times that suit you. While independent midwifery exists nationally, the relationship-led, continuity-focused care I offer is delivered in person across these three areas.
Is there a midwife service that offers one-to-one care in Essex?
Yes. As an independent midwife based in Essex, I provide one-to-one care throughout the county, including Waltham Abbey, Loughton, Chigwell, Harlow, Chelmsford, and Brentwood. Every appointment is with me directly, not a rotating team, so you build a genuine relationship over the course of your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period.
What are the benefits of having a personal midwife during pregnancy in London?
Having a personal midwife during pregnancy in London means longer appointments, no waiting rooms, and continuity from the same familiar face at every visit. For many families, the biggest benefit is simply feeling truly known and listened to, rather than repeating your history to a different midwife each time. It also means your midwife knows your birth preferences in detail and can support you consistently, whether you're planning a home birth or hospital birth support.
