Private Midwifery Support in Essex: From Pregnancy to Postnatal Care
If you're considering private midwifery care in Essex, you may be wondering what support is actually available and whether you need private care throughout your whole pregnancy and birth.
Private midwifery can be tailored around you. You may be looking for continuity throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, planning a home birth, wanting additional support alongside NHS care, or simply needing some extra help at a particular stage.
I'm Emma, an independent private midwife based in Waltham Abbey, providing personalised midwifery care to families across Essex.

What does private midwifery support in Essex include?
Private midwifery care can include antenatal appointments, birth preparation, personalised birth planning, home birth care, hospital birth support, postnatal care and infant feeding support.
It doesn't necessarily mean having every stage of your maternity care privately.
Some families want continuity throughout their whole journey, while others may only need support during pregnancy, after birth or at a particular stage .
How do I book a home birth midwife in Essex?
If you're considering a home birth, you can contact me directly to arrange a free initial consultation.
We can talk about your pregnancy, previous births if relevant, where you live, what you're hoping for and any questions or concerns you have about giving birth at home.
If we decide to work together, we'll have time during pregnancy to get to know each other and prepare for your home birth, rather than meeting for the first time when you're in labour.
How does home birth support work in Essex?
Home birth support begins well before labour.
During pregnancy we can discuss your individual circumstances, birth preferences, preparation, equipment and what would happen if your plans in labour changed.
When you're in labour, I come to your home with the appropriate equipment and stay with you throughout labour and birth. A second qualified midwife also attends the birth, and I remain with you during the early postnatal period.
If transfer to hospital becomes necessary, I continue to support you through that process.
What does personalised birth support mean?
Personalised care means your support is based around you rather than expecting you to fit into one standard approach.
We can talk about your previous experiences, what's important to you, how and where you're considering giving birth and any choices or concerns you'd like to explore.
My role is to provide evidence-based information and experienced midwifery support so you can be involved in decisions about your own pregnancy and birth.
Can a private midwife help me make a birth plan?
Yes.
Birth planning with a private midwife gives you dedicated time to explore the choices that are relevant to your individual pregnancy and the birth you're hoping for.
We can look at different options together, discuss any recommendations you've been given and consider what feels important to you.
It can also be an opportunity to think through different scenarios before labour begins, so you feel better informed about the decisions you may be asked to make.
Can I have continuity of care with a midwife in Waltham Abbey?
Yes.
I'm based in Waltham Abbey and provide continuity of care to families locally and across Essex.
Continuity means having a midwife who gets to know you rather than repeatedly starting again with somebody new.
I get to know your history, your preferences, the conversations we've already had and what's important to you. You also get to know me, which can make it easier to ask questions and talk openly about how you're feeling.
What are the benefits of continuity of care?
For many families, one of the biggest benefits is simply having a relationship with the person providing their care.
There is less need to repeatedly explain your history, previous experiences or birth preferences because I already know them.
Continuity also gives us time to build trust throughout pregnancy, so as birth approaches you're being supported by somebody familiar who understands you and your wishes.
Where can I get breastfeeding and infant feeding support in Essex?
I provide private infant feeding support at home across Essex, including breastfeeding, expressing, bottle feeding and combination feeding.
You don't have to have received your pregnancy or birth care from me to ask for feeding support.
Sometimes you need practical help with feeding and sometimes you simply need time, reassurance and somebody experienced to sit with you and work through what's happening without judgement.
What can I expect from private postnatal midwifery care in Waltham Abbey?
Postnatal care is about looking after you as well as your baby.
I provide postnatal care at home in Waltham Abbey and across Essex.
Depending on your individual needs, visits can include checking your recovery after birth, your emotional wellbeing, feeding support, newborn checks, baby weight monitoring and answering all those questions that appear once you're home with your baby.
Postnatal support can be booked even if I wasn't your midwife during pregnancy or birth.
Do I need to book a complete private midwifery package?
Not necessarily.
There are different ways to use private midwifery care depending on the support you're looking for.
You might want regular care throughout pregnancy, support for your birth or additional care once your baby arrives. Alternatively, there may be one particular point in your pregnancy or postnatal period when some extra midwifery support would be helpful.
My services include both ongoing care and individual appointments, so we can look at what suits your circumstances.
How do I find out which private midwifery support is right for me?
Start with what you feel is missing from your current care.
Perhaps you'd like to see the same midwife regularly, you're considering a home birth, you'd like more time to discuss your birth choices, or you want additional support after your baby is born.
You don't need to fit neatly into one type of care. Looking at what you need first can help us work out whether a particular service, an individual appointment or more ongoing support would be most useful.
Private Midwifery Care That Works Around You
There isn't one reason why families choose private midwifery care.
For some, it's about knowing the midwife who will care for them. For others, it's having more time to explore their options, preparing for a home birth, extra support when labouring in hospital, having additional postnatal support or simply knowing where to turn when they need some extra help.
Guided By You Midwifery provides personalised private midwifery care from Waltham Abbey across Essex, as well as London and Hertfordshire.
If you'd like to talk about the support you're looking for, you can arrange a free 20-minute consultation with me.
