Antenatal Care FAQs: What to Expect from Independent Midwifery Support

Updated: Aug 1

Pregnancy brings a lot of questions, and it's not always clear who to ask or what's normal. These antenatal care FAQs cover what I get asked most often, answered honestly so you know exactly what to expect.

Antenatal Care FAQs: What's Included?

Antenatal care covers your physical health, your baby's development, and your emotional wellbeing throughout pregnancy. That means regular check ups, monitoring you and baby, answering your questions as they come up, and helping you plan for birth. It's personalised to you rather than a fixed checklist, so care flexes around what you and your pregnancy actually need.

Is it worth going private for childbirth in the UK?

This really depends on what matters most to you. Private midwifery care offers continuity, so you're supported by the same midwife throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond, along with more time, flexibility, and a personalised approach. For many families, that consistency and reassurance is worth it. I'm always happy to talk through what private care could look like for you.

How soon in pregnancy should I start antenatal care?

You can get in touch as soon as you have a positive test, though most families start antenatal visits from around 6 to 8 weeks. There's no need to wait for your NHS booking appointment first, I can support you from the very beginning if that's what you'd like.

Can I still see an NHS midwife or consultant alongside private care?

Yes, private midwifery care can run alongside NHS care rather than replacing it. Many of my clients keep their NHS midwife appointments as well as scans and consultant appointments where needed, while I provide the continuity, extra time, and personal support in between.

What happens at a booking appointment?

Your booking appointment is a thorough first visit where we go through your medical history, social history, family history, and discuss your pregnancy so far, before starting to build your care plan together. It's also a chance for you to ask anything on your mind, there's no rush and no question too small.

Do you support home visits throughout pregnancy?

Yes, all antenatal appointments take place at home, at times that suit you. Partners, family, and siblings are always welcome to be part of the visit.

What if I'm feeling anxious about pregnancy or birth?

Anxiety in pregnancy is more common than people realise, and you don't have to go through it alone. I offer calm, personalised support to help you feel heard and prepared, whether that's talking through worries, understanding your options, or making a birth plan that feels right for you.

Do you prepare me for life after birth, not just the pregnancy itself?

Yes, antenatal education is very important to me and I build this your care, so you are left without unanswered questions. We'll cover topics like safe sleep and reducing the risk of SIDS, winding, how to hold your baby, and how to place baby safely in the car seat. By the time you reach the postnatal period, these things feel familiar rather than overwhelming.

Can you provide me with the MAT B1?

Yes, after your anomaly scan, which is the scan at approximately 20 weeks, I will be able to provide this to you.

What do I need a MAT B1 for?

Your MAT B1 is the official form your employer will ask for to confirm your pregnancy and due date when arranging your maternity leave and pay. Your partner can also use it as evidence to arrange their paternity leave, so it's worth keeping a copy handy for both of you.

What do we discuss in early pregnancy appointments?

Early on, we'll go through your scans and blood test results together. From around 20 weeks onwards, we discuss preeclampsia and obstetric cholestasis at each appointment, so you know what to look out for throughout the rest of your pregnancy. Vaccinations are also discussed, including when the appropriate time is if you're considering having them, along with exercise, vitamins, a healthy diet, and foods to avoid, all woven into your appointments as they become relevant.

What do we discuss later on in pregnancy?

From around 28 weeks, we start measuring your symphysis fundal height at each visit to check how baby is growing. Around 30 weeks, we'll talk through packing your hospital bag, and by 34 weeks we'll begin birth planning together, so you feel involved and prepared for the choices ahead.

What do we discuss as I get closer to my due date?

From around 36 weeks, we'll discuss colostrum harvesting and perineal massage if these are things you'd like to explore. From 37 weeks onwards, we focus on when to call me if you're having a home birth, signs of early labour, and when to head to hospital in labour. We also discuss when to contact triage if you have any concerns, so you always know exactly what to do. And if you ever feel overwhelmed or forget what we've already gone through, that's completely understandable, I'm only ever a phone call away if you need me to talk it through again.

Do I have to book a full package, or can I have antenatal care only?

Yes, antenatal care is available on its own, you don't have to book it as part of a full package. It can be provided as standalone care, or combined with postnatal care, as some people choose antenatal and postnatal care without birth support. Please get in touch to discuss what would work best for you.

Do you provide antenatal care across London, Essex, and Hertfordshire?

Yes, antenatal support is available across all three areas, either as part of a full continuity of care package or as standalone antenatal care.
