Knowledge, preparation and practical skills to help you         feel ready for birth and life with your new baby

Private Antenatal Education & Birth Preparation

Feel informed, prepared and confident as you get ready to welcome
your baby

Antenatal education gives you and your partner time to prepare for labour, birth and those first days with your new baby.

My private antenatal education sessions are personal, practical and tailored to you. We can explore your birth choices, talk through what to expect and practise some of the skills that can help you both feel more confident when your baby arrives.

You do not need to be receiving your antenatal care from me to book these sessions. They are available as a standalone service for families across London, Essex and Hertfordshire.

Two Personalised Antenatal Education Sessions

Your antenatal education is provided over two private two-hour sessions, giving us plenty of time to talk, practise, ask questions and focus on the things that matter most to you and your partner.

Session One: Preparing for Labour & Birth

Our first two-hour session focuses on helping you understand what to expect during labour and birth, explore your choices and feel more prepared for the day your baby arrives.

We will cover:

  • Understanding labour and the different stages of labour

  • Signs that labour may be starting and when to seek support

  • Vaginal birth, assisted birth HBAC / VBAC and caesarean birth

  • Birth choices and preferences

  • Pain relief options at home and in hospital

  • Induction of labour, different methods used

  • Breathing and relaxation techniques

  • Hypnobirthing techniques

  • Positions and movement during labour

  • How your birth partner can support you

  • Perineal massage, how it can prepare the perineum for birth

  • Colostrum harvesting, how to express and safely store colostrum

  • Vaginal tears, degree of tears, hygiene and signs of infection

  • Episiotomy, what it is and why would it be recommended

  • Preparing and packing your hospital bag

  • Preparing for a home birth, if this is part of your plan

  • Your individual questions, concerns and birth preferences

There is no one right way to give birth. This session is about helping you understand your options, ask questions and make informed choices that feel right for you.

Session Two: Feeding & Caring for Your New Baby

Our second two-hour session looks beyond birth and helps you prepare for feeding your baby, the early postnatal period and the practical realities of caring for a newborn.

We will cover:

  • Breastfeeding and what to expect in the early days

  • Positioning and attachment

  • Recognising your baby's feeding cues

  • Bottle feeding and combination feeding

  • Safely preparing formula feeds

  • Winding and settling your baby

  • Safe sleep and reducing the risk of SIDS

  • Holding and handling your newborn safely

  • Changing a nappy

  • Dressing your baby

  • Bathing your baby

  • Safely putting your baby into their cot or Moses basket

  • What to expect during the early postnatal period

  • How partners can be involved in newborn care

  • Plenty of time for your questions

Meet Mabel

A big part of this session is practical, so Mabel, my demonstration baby, comes along too.

You and your partner can practise holding and handling a newborn, changing nappies, dressing, winding, bathing and safely putting a baby down to sleep.

It can be particularly helpful for partners who may never have held or cared for a newborn before. You can practise together in a relaxed environment, ask as many questions as you like and hopefully feel a little more prepared before you are doing it for real.

Partners Are Very Welcome

Antenatal education is not just for the person giving birth.

Partners are encouraged to take an active part in both sessions. We can talk about practical ways they can support you during labour and birth, as well as helping them feel confident caring for and feeding your baby after birth.

It is an opportunity for you both to prepare together.

Personalised to You

Every pregnancy, birth and family is different, so your antenatal education does not need to follow a rigid programme.

We can spend more time on the subjects that are particularly important to you, whether you are planning a home birth, preparing for a hospital birth, expecting your first baby or simply want some additional preparation and reassurance.

We will cover a lot of useful information on a wide range of topics so make sure you have a notepad and pen ready

These sessions can be booked independently, so you do not need to be receiving your antenatal care from me.
