Reassurance and guidance whenever questions or worries arise.

Support Between Midwife Appointments: Knowing Your Midwife Is There

Having your own midwife is about so much more than the appointments we have together.

For me, continuity of care is about building a warm, trusting and nurturing relationship where you feel known, listened to and genuinely cared for throughout your pregnancy, birth and those precious early days with your baby.

Sometimes you need information. Sometimes you have a question. Sometimes you need reassurance.

And sometimes it's simply comforting to know that your midwife is there.

Client Feedback: "I knew I could reach Emma by phone call or voice note whenever I needed support"

Care Doesn't End When Our Appointment Does

I don't want your care to feel as though it switches on when I arrive for an appointment and switches off again when I leave.

Our relationship continues in between.

You may remember something you wanted to ask me, receive some information you'd like to talk through, have a little wobble about something or simply want some reassurance.

That's all part of being cared for by me.

Sometimes You Just Need a Little Reassurance

Not every question needs another appointment.

Sometimes it's a quick WhatsApp message, a little chat on the phone or simply checking something that's been playing on your mind.

Please don't ever feel that a question is too small or that you're bothering me.

If it's important enough for you to be thinking about, I want for you to ask.

Sometimes a few reassuring words from somebody who knows you are all you need to carry on with your day feeling a little calmer.

A Familiar Voice Who Already Knows You

There's something very special about not having to start from the beginning every time you need support.

I already know your story.

I know the conversations we've had, what matters to you, what you're hoping for, what you've been worried about and the choices we've discussed together.

You aren't explaining yourself to a stranger.

You're contacting your midwife, someone who knows you.

For me, that's one of the loveliest parts of continuity of care.

Phone Calls, Messages & WhatsApp

Keeping in touch can be very relaxed.

Depending on the care we have arranged, we can also communicate through WhatsApp, text messages or phone calls between our appointments.

It could be a question, a photograph you want me to look at, an update after an appointment, something you've read that you want to talk through or simply a message saying, “Emma, can I just ask you something?”

You don't need to save everything up until I see you again.

Client Feedback: "I knew Emma was at the end of the phone when I needed her"

I'll Check In With You Too

You don't always have to be the one who contacts me.

I like to know how you're doing.

If things have been quiet, don't be surprised if a little message from me pops up:

“Hi, how are you? How are things? How's everyone doing?”

You might be absolutely fine. You might have no questions whatsoever, and that's lovely.

There's no expectation that something needs to be wrong.

Sometimes it's simply me saying hello and reminding you:

I'm here if you need me.

Client Feedback: "Emma regularly checked in by text in addition to our planned face to face visits"

Proactive, Personal Midwifery Care

I believe good midwifery is about more than responding when somebody asks for help.

I like to be proactive, thoughtful and one step ahead where I can be.

Because I get to know you, I can think about what might be coming next, conversations we may need to have and information that might be useful to you.

Sometimes that means sending you something I think you'll find helpful. Sometimes it's suggesting an option you hadn't considered. Sometimes it's thinking outside the box because the usual approach doesn't quite fit you.

And sometimes it's simply checking that you're okay.

That's what individualised, holistic care means to me.

Someone in Your Corner

Pregnancy and preparing for birth can sometimes feel overwhelming.

There can be appointments, decisions, opinions, information and lots of different voices.

Having continuity means there's someone in your corner who already understands you.

Someone you can come back to, talk things through with and ask the questions you didn't think of until afterwards.

My role isn't to make your decisions for you. It's to help you feel informed, supported, reassured and confident as you make them.

Client Feedback: Emma was always there for all our questions, including the late night panics"

Your Partner Is Welcome Too

Your partner is part of this journey too, and they often have questions and worries of their own.

WhatsApp chats with partners are actually quite common and are very happily accepted.

Sometimes a partner wants to ask me something, check that something is normal or understand how they can best support you.

With your agreement, I'm very happy for your partner to be part of our ongoing communication.

I care for women, but I also recognise the family around them. Feeling supported as a family matters too.

The Little “Is This Normal?” Moments

Pregnancy and having a new baby seem to create an endless supply of “Is this normal?” questions.

And that's okay.

Sometimes the answer is reassurance. Sometimes we need a longer conversation. Occasionally, what you tell me means I'd like you to be assessed further.

You don't need to know which one it is before you contact me.

We can work that out together.

Emotional Support Is Part of Care

Not everything that matters can be measured with a blood pressure machine or written in maternity notes.

You may feel anxious about an appointment, overwhelmed by a decision, worried after something you've been told or simply not quite yourself.

Your emotional wellbeing matters.

Holistic midwifery means caring about how you're feeling as well as what's happening physically.

Sometimes being heard by somebody you trust is exactly what you need.

Building Your Confidence

Being accessible isn't about making you feel dependent on me.

I want the opposite.

I want you to feel increasingly confident in yourself, your instincts, your choices and your ability to care for your baby.

Knowing you have somebody there to turn to can give you the confidence to trust yourself.

My job is to walk alongside you, not to take over.

After Your Baby Arrives

That ongoing support can feel particularly precious once your baby is here.

Suddenly there can be questions about feeding, your baby's behaviour, your own recovery, sleep, nappies, expressing, your emotions and a hundred tiny things nobody warned you you'd wonder about.

Sometimes you don't need another appointment.

You just need to ask: “Emma, is this okay?”

I also offer 14-day postnatal WhatsApp support as a standalone service, so you don't need to have booked any other care with me to access this support.

If you have booked a postnatal package of care with me, WhatsApp support is already included, you don't need to purchase it separately.

When You Need More Than Reassurance

Being warm, nurturing and accessible never comes at the expense of safety.

There will be times when a message or phone conversation tells me that you or your baby needs proper clinical assessment.

If I'm concerned, I will always be honest with you and explain what I think you should do next.

Contact with me does not replace maternity triage, urgent NHS assessment or emergency care when these are needed.

Sometimes caring for you means reassuring you.

And sometimes caring for you means saying, “I don't want you to wait, I'd like you to be assessed.

Client Feedback: "Emma was responsive whenever I had questions or worries"

Knowing I'm Here

For me, continuity isn't simply about seeing the same midwife at each appointment.

It's about connection, familiarity, trust and feeling genuinely cared for.

It's knowing that somebody remembers your story.

That somebody will check in.

That you can ask the little questions as well as the big ones.

That your partner can ask questions too.

That you don't have to explain yourself from the beginning every time.

And that somewhere in the background of your pregnancy, birth and early days as a family, you have a midwife who knows you, cares about how you're doing and is there when you need her.

That's what support between appointments means to me.

So, if you book care with me, never think twice about contacting me.

If having a midwife who really gets to know you, checks in with you and is there to answer those questions between appointments is important to you, get in touch and let's have a chat about the care you are looking for.
