There’s something special about welcoming a family back
A trusted relationship, ready for a new pregnancy and a new baby

Same Midwife for Your Second Baby

When a family comes back to me for their second or third baby, it means an enormous amount.

They've already trusted me to care for them through one of the biggest experiences of their lives, and when they choose me again, it feels incredibly special. There is already a connection between us, an understanding of one another and a relationship that can grow with each new pregnancy.

For many families, having the same midwife for their second baby brings a lovely sense of familiarity and reassurance. We already have a shared history, but this is a new pregnancy, a new baby and a new experience to discover together.

A Relationship That Grows With Your Family

There is something quite lovely about caring for a family as it grows.

I've been there through a previous pregnancy, watched you become a parent, met your baby, supported those early weeks and then, sometimes a few years later, I get the message to say there's another little one on the way.

That existing relationship brings a different feeling to the next pregnancy. We already know one another. There is trust, familiarity and a connection that has developed through an experience we've shared before.

And this time, there may be an older brother or sister waiting excitedly in the wings too.

Your Previous Birth Is Part of This Pregnancy

Every birth leaves its own memories.

There may be things from your previous experience that you remember with enormous happiness and would love to carry into this pregnancy.

There may also be things you would like to approach differently this time.

Having cared for you before means I have an understanding of that experience beyond the clinical details. We can reflect on what felt right for you, what you valued and anything you would like to explore differently as this pregnancy unfolds.

Your previous birth can inform our conversations, but it doesn't write the plan for this one.

Every Baby Brings Something New

Choosing the same midwife doesn't mean trying to recreate your previous birth.

You may have had a beautiful home birth or water birth and hope for something similar again.

You may have given birth in hospital and be considering something completely different. Or you may simply want to see how this pregnancy develops before deciding what feels right.

Every pregnancy has its own rhythm and every baby brings something new.

Birth can take unexpected turns, and having the same midwife again can never guarantee that your birth will unfold in the same way as before. What it does give us is an established relationship from which we can approach whatever this pregnancy brings.

The aim isn't to reproduce your last birth. It's to care for you and this baby, in this pregnancy, with all the individuality that comes with it.

Trust Is Already There

Trust is such an important part of maternity care, and when we have worked together before, that relationship already has roots.

You know how I communicate and how I care. You know my warmth, my honesty and my approach to supporting you in the choices you make. I know the things that are important to you and the kind of care that helps you feel safe, confident and empowered.

That doesn't mean we'll always know exactly what lies ahead. Pregnancy and birth don't work like that.

It simply means we're stepping into this next chapter with a relationship already established and ready to grow.

Continuity Beyond One Pregnancy

Continuity of care is usually talked about in terms of one pregnancy, from antenatal care through birth and into the postnatal period.

But sometimes continuity becomes something much bigger.

It stretches across pregnancies, babies and different chapters of family life. I've had the privilege of caring for women through more than one pregnancy, and each time I am invited back, I never take that trust for granted.

The care remains individual to you because you may be the same woman, but this is a different pregnancy and a different baby.

When Families Choose to Come Back

Perhaps the loveliest way to explain what this kind of continuity can mean is through the families who have chosen to come back.

"Emma has supported me through labour for both of my children. After a relatively nervous pregnancy and labour in hospital for my first, I wanted a relaxed home birth for my second. I can honestly say that, with Emma's help, I got the perfect home birth. I felt genuinely heard with my wishes at every stage which really helped to facilitate my dream birth."

Katie Townsend

"Emma cared for me during both my pregnancies. I cannot recommend her highly enough, she is caring, reassuring and hugely knowledgeable."

Danielle St. Pierre

"From the moment I found out I was pregnant again, I knew there was no way I wanted to do this journey without her. Emma brings such a rare balance of experience, knowledge, and genuine care and she has made me feel completely safe and supported every step of the way."
