Debunking Myths About Private Midwifery Care

Private midwifery care comes with a lot of assumptions, some accurate, many outdated or simply untrue. If you're considering continuity of care but aren't sure what to believe, here's the truth behind some of the most common myths.

Myth: Private midwifery care is only for high-risk pregnancies

Private midwifery isn't reserved for any particular risk category. I support families with low-risk, straightforward pregnancies, as well as those whose circumstances fall slightly outside standard guidelines. What matters most is having an honest, thorough conversation with an independent midwife, of your choice, about your individual situation, so you can make informed choices about your care either way.

Myth: It's only for home births

Home birth is one option I support, but far from the only one. I also provide hospital birth support, attending as your birth partner and advocate, working alongside the hospital's own midwifery team, wherever you choose to give birth.

Myth: It's extremely expensive, only for wealthy families

Private midwifery reflects the personalised, one-to-one nature of the care, longer appointments, direct access to me, and consistent support throughout your journey. Costs vary depending on the level of support you choose, and I'm always happy to talk through pricing and what's included on an initial call, with no obligation.

Myth: You lose access to NHS care if you go private

Many families combine both. You can use private care for the relationship, continuity, and personalised support, while still accessing NHS scans, bloods, and hospital facilities where needed. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Myth: Private midwives can't help in an emergency

I'm trained to recognise and manage complications, and I carry the necessary equipment to respond quickly. If a transfer to hospital becomes necessary, I arrange this without delay and stay with you throughout, so you're never navigating that moment alone.
