Recommended Private Midwife in London

Updated: Aug 4

If you are searching for a recommended private midwife in London, you are likely looking for one thing above all else: continuity. Someone who knows your history, your birth preferences and your family, and who is there with you from your first booking appointment through to your postnatal care.

I am Emma, an independent midwife running Guided By You Midwifery. Although I am based in Waltham Abbey, Essex, I regularly support families giving birth across London, attending hospitals including Northwick Park, Barnet, Whittington, St Mary's, St Thomas', UCLH, Guy's, Royal London, Chelsea and Westminster, Whipps Cross, Homerton and Newham.

What continuity of care means in practice

With independent midwifery, you see the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period, rather than a rotating team. For London families, that often means:

  • One midwife who knows your full history and preferences, whichever hospital you choose to birth in

  • Home-based appointments at times that suit you, rather than fitting around clinic slots

  • Support that continues seamlessly whether you plan a home birth or a hospital birth

  • Partners, family and siblings welcome at every appointment

Why families choose independent midwifery in London

London has excellent NHS maternity services, but continuity of carer within the NHS system can be difficult to guarantee, particularly across a busy trust. Independent midwifery is one way to secure that continuity while still being able to birth at your chosen London hospital, or at home.

I support women with low risk pregnancies as well as those with care needs slightly outside standard guidelines, so if you have been told your options are limited, it is worth having a conversation before assuming that is the case.

12 years of midwifery experience

I trained and worked within the NHS before moving into independent practice, including roles at Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust and Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. That NHS background means I understand how hospital teams work, and I am experienced at supporting families attending London hospitals alongside their existing care team.

What London families say

Lambeth: A mother I supported through her third trimester, labour and the birth of her first baby told me how much the practical advice and proactive approach meant to her, giving her peace of mind exactly when she needed it most.

Pinner: A mother I cared for right through her pregnancy and into the fourth trimester said the reassurance and encouragement never let up, with support always on hand, no matter the question, and credited that ongoing help with successfully establishing breastfeeding.

Plaistow: A second-time mother I supported, who had a high BMI and gestational diabetes and was on the high-risk NHS pathway for a hospital birth, said having continuous support made her feel far calmer and more confident navigating decisions than she had in her first pregnancy, with help always just a phone call away.

West London: A mother I looked after through her first month postnatally said the calm, confidence and reassurance made an overwhelming time feel manageable, describing the knowledge and warmth as exceptional throughout.

Harrow: A mother I supported said the confidence and belief instilled in her ability to give birth naturally carried her through, even during an unexpected hospital transfer, with voice notes and text support proving invaluable when plans changed.

Walthamstow: A mother I cared for during her second pregnancy, after a previous traumatic birth, said the care was compassionate and relentlessly supportive from start to finish, describing every appointment as feeling like a visit with a trusted friend rather than a medical professional.

Forest Gate: A mother I supported in the postnatal period said the support made an enormous difference, with regular check-ins between visits and a level of knowledge and kindness that helped her feel confident and equipped during a crucial early stage of parenting.
