Convenient weight checks at home with time to talk through how your baby is feeding and growing
Baby Weight Checks at Home
It is completely normal to have questions about your baby’s weight in the first days and weeks after birth.
Is my baby gaining enough weight? Are they feeding well? Is the weight loss normal? When should they be weighed again?
I offer baby weight checks at home across London, Essex and Hertfordshire, alongside personalised postnatal midwifery support for you and your baby.
Baby weight checks can be offered from day three onwards and throughout your postnatal care until discharge, giving you continuity, reassurance and the opportunity to discuss feeding, your baby’s wellbeing and any questions or concerns you may have.
What Happens During a Baby Weight Check at Home?
A baby weight check is about much more than simply putting your baby on the scales.
Your baby will be weighed using appropriate baby weighing scales, allowing us to monitor their weight and look at their progress since birth or their previous weight check.
But the number on the scales is only one part of the picture.
We can also talk about how your baby is feeding, wet and dirty nappies, how they are waking and settling for feeds and how you feel feeding is going.
It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and receive personalised postnatal support in the comfort of your own home.
Why Do Babies Lose Weight After Birth?
It is common for babies to lose some weight during the first few days after birth.
Your baby’s weight will be considered alongside their feeding, jaundice, nappies, general wellbeing and how they are adapting following birth.
Rather than looking at one number in isolation, I will look at the overall picture and explain what your baby’s weight means for them.
If there are concerns about your baby’s weight loss or weight gain, we can discuss what additional feeding support, monitoring or medical assessment may be appropriate.
When Can You Weigh My Baby?
Baby weight checks are available from day three onwards as part of the postnatal care I offer. Early weight checks can be particularly helpful when assessing how your baby is feeding, monitoring their progress and providing reassurance during those first days after birth.
How frequently your baby needs to be weighed will depend on their individual circumstances, however, all babies should have a routine weight check on day five. This allows us to assess their percentage weight loss alongside their overall wellbeing. How much weight your baby has lost and how feeding is progressing, will then determine when their next weight check is recommended.
Some families may simply want reassurance that their baby is progressing well, while others may benefit from additional weight monitoring alongside feeding support.
We can decide together when another weight check would be helpful rather than weighing your baby unnecessarily.
Baby Weight and Feeding
Weight and feeding often go hand in hand during the early postnatal period.
If your baby’s weight is causing concern, we can look at the whole feeding picture rather than focusing solely on the scales.
This may include discussing how frequently your baby is feeding, signs of effective feeding, positioning and attachment where appropriate, expressing, combination feeding or any feeding plan you are currently following.
My role is to support you and your baby without judgement, whatever feeding choices are right for your family.
What If My Baby Has Lost More Weight Than Expected?
If your baby’s weight loss or weight gain requires closer monitoring, I will explain what this means and discuss the next steps with you.
Depending on your baby’s individual circumstances, this may include additional feeding support, a feeding plan, another weight check or referral for further assessment where appropriate.
The important thing is that you understand what is happening and why, rather than simply being given a percentage or number without explanation.
Can You Come Back and Weigh My Baby Again?
Yes, one of the benefits of private postnatal midwifery support is continuity.
I can continue to provide weight checks and postnatal support as appropriate throughout your care until discharge.
Baby Weight Checks in the Comfort of Your Own Home
Having your baby weighed at home means you don’t necessarily have to organise an additional trip out with a newborn simply to check their weight.
I can visit you in your own home, weigh your baby and give you time to talk through how things are going.
Those early days can bring lots of questions, and sometimes reassurance comes not just from knowing your baby’s weight but from having someone take the time to look at the whole picture with you.

How soon after birth can you weigh my baby?
I can provide baby weight checks from day three onwards, depending on your baby’s individual circumstances and postnatal care needs.

No. Your baby’s weight is only one part of their overall wellbeing. We can also discuss feeding, wet and dirty nappies, your baby’s behaviour and any questions or concerns you have.
Can you help if I am worried about feeding as well as weight?
Yes. Feeding and weight are often closely connected in the early days. Your appointment gives us time to look at how feeding is going and discuss any additional infant feeding support that may be helpful.
Can you weigh my baby more than once?
Yes. If your baby would benefit from ongoing weight monitoring, I can return for further weight checks and support you throughout your postnatal care until discharge.
What happens if you are concerned about my baby's weight?
If your baby’s weight or general wellbeing requires further assessment, I will explain my concerns, discuss the next steps with you and recommend or arrange appropriate referral or medical assessment where needed.
Can I book a one-off appointment for a baby weight check?
Absolutely. Please get in touch to discuss what support you and your baby need. Depending on your circumstances, we can discuss the most appropriate postnatal appointment and whether further follow-ups would be helpful.
