What to Expect from Private Antenatal Care

Updated: Jul 10

Pregnancy is one of the most significant times of your life, and the care you receive during it matters enormously. If you've been thinking about private antenatal care but aren't sure what it involves or whether it's right for you, this post is for you.

As an independent private midwife, I provide antenatal care to families across London, Essex and Hertfordshire. Here's exactly what you can expect when you choose private antenatal care with Guided By You Midwifery.

What is Private Antenatal Care?

Private antenatal care is personalised pregnancy care provided by an independent midwife outside of the NHS. You still receive all the same clinical checks and monitoring, but with significantly more time, attention, and consistency than is typically possible within the NHS.

The most important difference is that with private antenatal care, you see the same midwife at every single appointment. That means by the time your baby arrives, your midwife knows you, your wishes, your concerns, and your birth plan inside out.

What Happens at a Private Antenatal Appointment?

Each appointment is unhurried and built entirely around you. There's no rushing through a checklist. A typical private antenatal appointment with me includes:

  • Blood pressure monitoring and urine testing

  • Monitoring your baby's growth and wellbeing

  • Discussion of your scan results and what they mean for you

  • Blood test results explained in full

  • Vaccinations during pregnancy, what's recommended and why

  • Discussions around pregnancy symptoms and how you're feeling

  • Birth planning and preparation for labour

  • Packing your hospital bag, what you actually need

  • Antenatal education at your own pace

  • Safe sleeping and SIDS guidance

  • Infant feeding discussions

  • Emotional support throughout your pregnancy

  • Space to ask every question you have, however big or small

Most importantly, I take the time to really listen. If something is worrying you, we talk about it. If you have questions about your options, we explore them together.

How is Private Antenatal Care Different from NHS Care?

NHS midwives work incredibly hard, but the reality is that appointment times are short and you may see a different midwife each time. With private antenatal care you get:

  • Longer appointments with no time pressure

  • The same midwife every time

  • Continuity of care from pregnancy through to birth and beyond

  • More time to discuss your options, feelings, and concerns

  • A genuinely personal relationship with your midwife

When Should I Start Private Antenatal Care?

You can start private antenatal care at any point in your pregnancy, though many families choose to begin in the first trimester so we have plenty of time to get to know each other before the birth.

Does Private Antenatal Care Include Birth Support?

At Guided By You Midwifery, my antenatal care packages are designed to provide true continuity, meaning the same midwife who supports you through pregnancy can also be with you for your birth and postnatal care. This is one of the most valuable aspects of private midwifery care.
